Feeling the WIPPlash. Deja vu all over again. This is beginning to feel like Unit 4, Fukushima. Where does truth end and fiction take over?
Two weeks ago a truck caught fire in the north wing of the WIPP underground nuclear waste storage facility; or not. Black smoke poured out of several holes in the ground. Very black smoke. Lots of it. The footage of the smoke came from a private, anonymous soul with a camera. Not from WIPP. So where is their film? Am I missing something here?
That's all they appear to know about it. Truck fire, followed by evacuation of all personnel. Nobody's been down there since. No data, no video.
A week ago there was a ''puff'' of radiation released from below ground. It contained lots of radiation, but that got WIPP-lashed down to almost nothing by the magic of adjusting for some magical ''background radiation'' before it was fed through the blender to make a delicious banana smoothie.
Nothing's happened, it's all harmless. But we don't know what's happened because no-one can go down there. Anyway it was all low-level waste — gloves and old clothes and stuff. Or not. One of these geniuses says some of the stuff down there is more potent than that at Hanford. Not only that, it's being stored in cardboard and plywood boxes and thin mild steel 44 gallon drums. In a salt mine suffering a bit of water damage, and with a live fracking operation going on underneath it as we speak . But it's all safe. The salt is not going to dissolve…
,,, and eat the drums and cardboard and plywood and put all the radiation down there into the new mexico groundwater and aquifers. workers are going to be able to go back down 2200 feet underground into the salt repository and sort out whatever happened to the low level/high level waste that make it escape above ground in a ''puff'' that was harmless or will kill thousands because it is plutonium. Or not. Soon we will have the movie of the never-ending removal of the spent fuel rods that are not supposed to be there. Or not. Ho hum.

ReplyDeleteI posted the below link on ENE and few if any showed any interest. Possibly because it was 40 pages long written by attorney's.
This is a proposed amendment to the NRC stating facts related to the renewal proceedings for licensing of NPP's and SFP's.
In short the arguments are laid forth that the current operational procedures for the storage of spent fuel rod assembly cells do not meet the criterion to go from reactor, spent fuel storage to dry cask with regards to the heat given off. Furthermore the way the NPP operators have crammed the racks together in the SFP, doubles their storage. This is only true if you use an open rack configuration. As is, these racks are now not open and are called low density which is a misnomer of the facts. see pg. 3.
For the past 3 months I have read every patent, foreign and domestic concerning spent fuel rod assembly cell's and cell (egg crate) racks. I analyzed all of the prior art and claims to the prior art. These patents and their application to any BWR or PWR are inconsistent with their application. In fact a fuel assembly for a BWR can fit into a BWR reactor. The only thing that changes is the type of fuel pellet that is installed.
However you cannot store in a SFP a BWR, PWR fuel assembly in the configuration that the NRC now endorses. In the case of Fukushima SFP, #4, they stored fuel rods that were hot in a storage rack that was not designed for the fuel rod assembly. This does not affect the fact that it could not be cooled but the fact that these assemblies could interact with the Zirconium cladding with free oxygen enclosed in the egg crate configuration such that even if the water level was one or more meters above the fuel assembly cell it could fizzle out of control. That is why some said the SFP #4 was dry, then contained some water and finally was "intact".
The point remains that the heart of this matter and others is contained in the Proposed Amendment to C.F.R. Part 51., submitted by petitioners. If this petition holds ground it could mean the end of nuclear power as we know it. The costs to build new SFP's, delay dry casking, engineer new fuel assembly cell's and racks would cause a complete review before licensing could be administered.
I've read this document and can confirm the science behind their argument behind the petition with regards to any stated patentable claim.

Your academic preparation is not significant nor sufficient to really tackle this subject in any great detail as it deserves. I have offered my help but you continue to label pro nuclear people as trolls. When will you learn?
ReplyDeleteIt is truly amazing to see how much effort, education, and total foolishness one will employ to satisfy some lack of self worth. You nukes biggest fear is the coming change. Your technology will provide its own demise, the waste problem. As smart as you guys are, you can not get a solution in place, in time to save your own bacon. No one need be smarter than the nuke bunch, you are out witting yourselves. Something better, safer, cheaper, will replace nuclear power. It will slowly fade away.

I think you are really afraid of finding out that you are wrong in your analysis on many accounts. People like you like to hide behind the majority opinion and silence the minority. When the truth that you cant stack up to real nuke pro's such as Dr. Hayes or Dr. Buesseler or anyone with a nuclear degree then you hide behind your ENE pals.
