Entergy Prepping to Shut Down Fitzpatrick Nuclear, Another Nuclear Plant Losing Money

We could have a happy Monday.   Entergy is already shutting down Pilgrim, now they may shut down Fitzpatrick, and possibly Indian Point. 

Shutting them down is better than fleecing ratepayers with huge increases.   Sometime Entergy threatens to leave a market and gets a huge increase is rates, this one is 31% over 4 years.    That will kill people on fixed incomes.

In general nuclear plants need to give local grid operators/governments 6 month notice prior to shutting down.

They also need months to procure and deliver fuel, and to set up the 1000 or so "migrant workers" needed for a refueling/outage.

And in general, they care about their employees as they do not want bad street cred in their industry, meaning the want to give people maximum notice to transmition, find a new job.

ODDLY Entergy also announces 3rd quarter earnings on Monday.   The said they would make a decision regarding closing Fitzpatrick or not over the weekend.

Interesting timing.    They also set up a special 800 number that employees could call in to see if they had a job.   Huh?    You want to employees to be calling in at unspecified times throughout the weekend to have a computer record tell them "You're Fired!".   

I mean, if it can't wait until Monday to announce at work, just send an email?   Why the drama?   Seems like a lot of work to set up a special 800 number for that purpose.

Could be part of an overall game, they are playing chicken with Cuomo, who wants Indian point shut down, but Fitzpatrick to remain open.     Grid supply could be touchy with 2 shutting down in same time frame.

Kimchi is one of those things that seems so exotic but is so ridiculously easy to make at home — and fresh, homemade kimchi is infinitely better tasting than anything you can buy from the market.
If you’ve never had this fermented side dish, think of it like a spicy Korean version of sauerkraut. The smoke and fire comes from gochugaru, a Korean red pepper powder (sometimes also called Korean chile flakes or Korean chili powder, but definitely not to be confused with American red pepper flakes or American chili powder).

Homemade kimchi is a pungent and complex blend of flavors owing to traditional spices (gochugaru, garlic and ginger) as well as a puree of Asian pear and yellow onion, which adds a subtle sweetness without the need for sugar. I use red cabbage for the same antioxidant benefits I get from my ruby kraut. (But you can also use the more traditional napa cabbage.)

Similar to kraut, kimchi is full of probiotic goodness and it’s not solely limited to Korean dishes. I’ve made kimchi omelets, kimchi quesadillas, kimchi pizza, and even spooned a heaping of kimchi on a baked potato. This version is a medium spicy that won’t burn your tongue off, but still has enough heat and tang to make a meal interesting.

Red Cabbage Kimchi
Makes 3 quarts
2 pounds red cabbage, chopped
1/4 cup pickling salt
1/2 pound daikon, julienned
1/2 pound carrot, julienned
6 green onions, sliced into 1-inch segments
4 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced
1 small Asian pear (or apple), peeled, cored and chopped
1 small yellow onion, chopped
1 cup dechlorinated water
1/2 cup gochugaru (Korean red pepper powder)
2 tablespoons fish sauce
Red cabbage tends to be a tad tougher than napa cabbage, so I chop mine into thin, bite-sized pieces.

The indifference reflects widespread public doubt that human activities play a significant role in global warming, a tone set by President Vladimir Putin, who has offered only vague and modest pledges of emissions cuts ahead of December’s U.N. climate summit in Paris.
Russia’s official view appears to have changed little since 2003, when Putin told an international climate conference that warmer temperatures would mean Russians “spend less on fur coats” while “agricultural specialists say our grain production will increase, and thank God for that”.
The president believes that “there is no global warming, that this is a fraud to restrain the industrial development of several countries including Russia,” says Stanislav Belkovsky, a political analyst and critic of Putin. “That is why this subject is not topical for the majority of the Russian mass media and society in general.”

Putin’s scepticism dates from the early 2000s, when his staff “did very, very extensive work trying to understand all sides of the climate debate”, said Andrey Illarionov, Putin’s senior economic adviser at the time and now a senior fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington.
“We found that, while climate change does exist, it is cyclical, and the anthropogenic role is very limited,” he said. “It became clear that the climate is a complicated system and that, so far, the evidence presented for the need to ‘fight’ global warming was rather unfounded.

Effective Action, Or Wasting Our Time. Stock Out

I have put quite some time into this effort, this effort to eliminate civilian nuclear power plants.  

Some of my buddies in my Bachelor of Science, and especially my Masters of Science programs have giving me quite a bit of grief regarding my decision on my this decade take on how the nuclear industry has been implemented.    Seriously, even to the point of losing friends.

Once indoctrinated into the sanctum of science, many believe that science is the fix for everything, that science cannot do more damage than good.

They are wrong.

That said, I feel that much of my efforts have not motivated people to take effective action, and that is very disappointing.    I am not doing this to hear myself speak.

However, I have a litmus test, and it is one that must be completed by next Monday.

If I see here posted, 25 comments from people who posted to the NRC on the "Hormesis Hobgoblin" or the EPA boondoggle, then I shall resume.

It seems like a proper documentation and explanation of what is going on should harness 20,000,000 responses.....but I will settle for 25.  

If I can't get 25 comments here or to my direct email, I am done, waste of time.

$1.4B of nuclear propaganda is too strong, if I can't see 25 responses.  I won't fight a losing battle no matter how right it is.    You got game? Show it now, or stop coming here for a moral " I knew it".   We don't need you if all you got it a "told you so, things are effed up".

"Properly" Stored Dry Cask Used Nuke Fuel, and Nuke Dumps, Do Still Damage Babies

No time to develop into a nice article, this guy BasM really knows his stuff, so I want to document this information source.

Those nuclear waste dumps, harm DNA of new babies born up to 40km in their surroundings.
Due to the neutron-argon41 mechanisms DNA of babies born nearby the dump (within 5km) are less harmed and those at a distance of 20-30km away are harmed most!

    Why would the harm be greater at 20-30km than at 5km? What would be the mechanism by which this "neutron-argon41 mechanism" harms babies' DNA?

      Shortly; the DNA damage is caused by (mainly gamma) radiation from argon41 (half life 108minutes). The argon41 is created by the collision of argon40 nuclei (in the air) with escaping neutrons from the nuclear waste dump (neutrons can pass through thick steel, etc). The air is relative hot due to heat of the nuclear waste casks, so it will rise.
      But the argon41 adheres to small water droplets and comes gradually down to the earth surface (as shown at the Belgian Mol experiment) where it is inhaled etc. The coming down takes time during which period the wind transported the argon41 already longer distance (depending on wind speed, but mostly >5km).

      There is little US/UK research in this field. So the Germans are leading.
      German language is highly similar to English (English, Dutch, German are just dialects from each other). Google translates does a good job.
      Some of the research is published in English scientific journals and generated critical comments and responses. This Pubmed page gives a nice overview (note that no.5 is the original publication):

      Here is a table of gamma emission energies:
      Argon 41 has a gamma energy of 1293 KeV--so not quite as energetic as potassium 40 at 1460 KeV.

      I'm sure that happens, but the critical question is, how much does it happen? Here's a paper which modeled neutron emission from dry cask storage (page 17):
      Right at the surface of the cask, the average dose exposure rate from both neutrons and secondary photons averages around 0.07 millisieverts per hour. On page 28 of the study you cited, the chart there shows the absorption cross section for argon 40 is 0.2 % of its absolute cross section, which is 0.65 barns, That would mean its absorption cross section in the relevant spectrum would be 0.0013 barns. That's around 15 times larger than the corresponding absorption cross section for nitrogen 14, but nitrogen 14 is has 85 times the atmospheric prevalent of argon 40, so roughly 5.7 times as many neutrons would be absorbed by nitrogen 14 as by argon 40. And some neutrons will also be lost to oxygen and hydrogen. So we start with fairly low levels of neutron radiation right at the surface of the cask, and then maybe 15 percent of that results in argon 41 production.

      The heat production by the time spent fuel goes into cask storage is around 1KW per tonne of fuel. So a cask with, say, 20 tonnes of fuel would start out with around 20 KW--about the energy of overhead sunlight falling on a 5 meter square. That small an amount of energy would quickly be lost in the normal behavior of thermals.

      Argon is an inert gas at typical environmental temperatures. It seems unlikely that it would adhere to anything. Also, why would there be droplets except in fog or precipitation conditions?

      Once mixed into the atmosphere, argon has virtually no tendency to unmix and settle.

      How much dispersal dilution will have occurred by this point? And how does this damage the DNA of babies?

      The half-life of argon 41 is only 1.8 hours. The more time it takes to reach the longer distances, the less of it there will be. In the U.S., the max allowed radiation from cask storage at the site boundary is less than 0.00003 millisieverts per hour, though measured values are typically well below that. Hard to see how that could pose any significant gamma hazard to baby DNA 20-30km away--especially when compared to in-body gamma emissions from potassium 40.

      Your table is too simple. The most important emissions are at 5.6MeV; 4.7keV; 3.7MeV and 1.2MeV.
      Total energy involved ~6MeV.
      Cask emissions
      Measurements with nice graphs:
      Gorleben has stationary measurement stations at the fence of its area. As the escaped neutrons have to pass the 50cm thick wall of the building and an high thick dike (berm), those measure mostly only sky-shined (reflected back to the surface via collisions with air nuclei) radiation. Abb.9 at page 24 shows that the sky-shined neutron radiation is ~0.2mSv/a:
      Note that this sky-shined neutron radiation has little effect as also shown by m/f sex ratio of newborn in Gorleben (~2km away) and the measurement station in the village. The damaging effects are mainly at greater distances (20-30km away) due to the neutron-Ar41 mechanisms as e.g. shown at sheet 18 of this English presentation: http://www.helmholtz-muenchen....
      The heat production
      The power of the heat produced by the 113casks in the storage building is ~5MW. Enough to create the substantial upwards stream of air, which causes that the ar-41 need substantial time before it reaches the surface. Hence the DNA damage occurs mainly at 15-30km away (depends on the local wind speeds. At the Bezau NPP the DNA damage peak is more nearby).
      Argon41 coming down gradually
      Normal argon (ar-40) is indeed inert. But argon41 behaves differently as also shown by the Mol experiment.
      how does this damage the DNA of babies?
      The gamma radiation particles of the ar41 (partly also inhaled, etc) damage DNA, which is mostly repaired if the cell is stable.
      But sperm is produced via a.o. very fast cell division, shortly before conception.
      At cell division (and shortly thereafter) DNA damage cannot be repaired or is often repaired wrongly because a.o. the new cell isn't fully equipped for correct repair yet and/or the DNA is single stranded, etc.
      As male DNA is smaller it has a lower chance to be hit and killed by a radiation particle. So an increase in ionizing radiation creates an increase in the m/f sex ratio of new born as also stated by UNSCEAR in its 1958 report to the UN.
      The problem is that these new born have increased chance on Down syndrome, serious congenital malformations, etc. because the radiation particles damaged their DNA not enough to prevent multiplication. The radiation particles that hit the DNA will often only create some damage, not enough to prevent further cell division.

 A new report declaring that processed meat causes cancer — and that red meat probably does, too — has the meat industry furious and bacon lovers worried.

The report doesn't say that just one bite of meat causes cancer. What it does say is that there are clear mechanisms for both processed and red meat to cause cancer, and that studies have shown across populations that the more meat people eat, the higher their risk of cancer.

The group includes processed meat that has been salted, cured, fermented or smoked to preserve it or to add flavor. It gives specific examples — hot dogs, ham, sausages, corned beef, canned meat and some sauces.

It defines red meat as any muscle that comes from a mammal, including beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse, and goat...

Hmmm in 1900 we preserved meat by salting, curing, fermenting, or smoking.....and only 6% of us got cancer, so now its 66%.

Is it really those processes?

Nuke Dump "Fire" Can Kill 61,000,000 Americans -- EPA Shuts off the Beta and the Gamma Radiation Detection

Last week was a nuclear dump fire, in which the startling an amazing caught video of the explosions and volcanic ejections was just recently making the rounds.

 ENENEWS caught some Gamma 5 Radiation data from Las Vegas and published it, here.

Let me post the punchline at the front, how many people could be killed by what is KNOWN  to be a Beatty, and they did have documented sloppy practices.    61,000,000 People Can Be Killed!

They weren't supposed to dispose of any liquids at this site, but they did it ROUTINELY AND ILLEGALLY!

 I caught the EPA with their pants down (or at least the camera turned off while their pants were down) North and East of Vegas is St George Utah.

Then the Nevada nuclear dump fire "officially" started on the 18th of Oct.     Clearly it started a day or two before as the Gross Gamma count, started climbing.    This probably set off alarms at EPA because this site is otherwise very consistent.

So the EPA then just shuts off the monitor DATA.     Good work Gina McCarthy, she learned that trick during Fukushima.

Looks like St George UT didn't even get the worst of the plume as most of it went almost straight north.    That must have been one heck of a plume.

Salt Lake City UT definitely saw a  Gamma spike from the Nevada Beatty Nuke Dump Fire, this is a logarithmic scale too, so small chart changes mean huge changes in reality.

"They" would have us believe that the Beatty nuke waste dump was just a little trench that they threw some old gloves into.   

Reality is far different, all these drums rust out, the materials, metals, fluids combine or even fractionally separate by density

And this is the guy responsible for Emergency Protection who states all those alphabet soup agencies mobilized so quickly it was impressive, but they didn't find any radiation, at all.
