Somehow Google "dropped" all of my followers, or their gadget just broke. The new gadget I installed, also appears to be bad.

You could go with feedburner: its free, compatible with blogger and gives you a url like http://feeds.feedburner.com/**yoursitenamehere**

If you got a feedburner, you could find any rss.jpg icon you like, make an html widget, and put the icon in it linked to the feedburner url. Google couldnt break that widget, and people like me who would like to follow you could do it that way.
