Japan Sendai Nuclear Restart -- The Hubris Alone Is Killing Me, Let Alone the Volcano and Salt Water Leaks

I would drop a comment at the link, but I have been banned from Japan Times, so many TIMES that I can't count.    They have no interest in the truth.

Kyushu Electric checked the water quality and confirmed an increase in salt content.

Each condenser has some 26,000 tubes inside that are used to pipe seawater around for cooling. Kyushu Electric suspects that holes have opened on such tubes, causing seawater to enter into the condenser.



stock here---You know when you have a heat exchanger, and some of the tubes are already leaking....well 20,000 other tubes are also real close to leaking.    Think San Onofre.   But they say they can "fix it" within a week without shutting down.    Sounds odd to me.     Seems like the real story is the powers that be have decided that hell or high water (Volcanoes, Tsunamis, and Salt Leak damned) they are going to not let that plant shut down or they will lose face.    

And this is very dangerous way to think.   Perhaps they have 2 sets of heat exchangers, so they can run at 50% whilst one set is completely shut down and worked on.    Regardless, this is a stop gap measure, just like at San Onofre if some tubes are already going, there are many more right behind it.  So these stories will slip out at the weeks go on.  

Heat exchangers that can handle salt water are going to be stainless steel at least and ideally titanium. Industry has gotten a lot better at working with titanium in the last few decades.     So those 40 year old heat exchangers at Sendai are probably stainless steel, not at good as titanium. 

But in Typical japan Times Fashion, they try to downplay the incident by stating

In Japan, similar problems have occurred about 50 times in the past, but the latest case was the first at the Sendai power plant. In the past, Kyushu Electric experienced two cases at the No. 1 reactor at its Genkai plant in Saga Prefecture in 1997 and 1999.
Classic "don't worry" it happens all the time.   So the pimps of nuke will  do anything to keep this plant running.    Including putting your life and livelihood at risk.

  3. Japan reactors restarting. Your side has lost. You see nuclear energy will and has persevered. Its too good a technology. People like me that know this know it has legs. You can have your little site as there will always be those with hang ups over nuclear, but at the end of the day it just doesn't matter. It didn't matter in Japan. It won't matter anywhere where nuclear is appreciated. Keep spinning your wheels. It just won't matter.

    1. PWR steam generators do not process salt water on the shell side. Salt water cooling is a secondary system to support aux freshwater systems -a lesson learned from tmi. You don't hold SRO level knowledge on par with myself and others. So you wouldn't know how it all ties together in the great scheme of things. Knowledge is power as is experience.

    2. I think simple economics will eliminate nuke. bet ya even money Vogtle 3/4 never go critical.

      Just today a leaked DOE report show that MOX is twice as expensive as downblending and disposal. Sheesh, I had heard estimates up to 10 times the cost to reprocess used fuel and turn into MOX as opposed to long term disposal.

      Vogtle needs to sell at 15 cent/kWH plus transmission, plus overhead and profit. That will never make sense.

    3. Yo Nukist, you didnt even read the story, the salt got INTO the turbine side because of leaks in the condenser when they went to 75% power. Sounds like a San Onofre boondoogle to me, just lower pressures.

      Kind of sad a Material Science and Thermal Fluids expert has to school the almighty SRO, and you never thank me for the schooling, how arrogant is that.

    4. Yo Loose Thinking Process, I never sad San Onofre got salt in their steam generator heat exchanger....the failure was caused by hubris, lousy design, and lying flat out to the NRC about like for like.

  4. Stock is correct. They have condenser tube leaks that are letting the Salt water into the hot well since the steam is collapsing and creating a vacuum. They will isolate 1/2 the condenser, put shaving cream around the tube bundles and cover both sides with saran wrap. The ones that pop are the leaks and will be plugged. I am not an SRO but this is basic power plant maintenance.

    1. Condenser tube leaks are common. Yet you still have to go through feedwater system and another heat exchanger in a PWR to expose the RCS. The boiler plant for nuclear depends if you are talking PWR or BWR.

      Stock is wrong. As per usual. Next thing hell try and convince you those cylinders in the spent fuel pool are fuel pellets and not assembly locking tubes. Which they are. Hes a hack.

    4. For a thermo and fluids expert as you tuot, you fllunk power plant basics. The RCS pressure is nearly 3000 psia. The secondary is about 900 psia. So not even you will agree low pressure fluid would enter a high pressure stream. Here it is in a nutshell: the NRC doesn't care if the primary gets salt water contamination. That never happened on my watch and its minor. The NRC is charged with protecting public health and safety. They are more concerned with the potential for radioactive RCS water getting on the turbine and secondary side because as a fluids expert you would know high pressure flows into low pressure. Now that I've schooled you I can go to sleep knowing this "real" SRO trained degreed nuclear engineer can see through your crap. Give it up. I've got way way too much experience , education, and training to jpoust with the junior varsity. Have a good night.

    6. Yo dickweed, pay attention to details, it is thermal fluids and material science.

      But good point, the secondary at 900PSI still got salt into it, must be some odd specialized pressure gradients with the exchanger as well as large holes. Even then seems odd, whats the pressure on the salt water side as it enters the exchanger?

  5. You think that cartoon of the PWR tells all you need to know? There are feed water heat exchangers and feed pumps (think tmi) that you don't know about. Salt water never touches the turbine side from steam generators. I spent over 1500 days at Songs, either helping keepunits 1,2 3 safe or startup testing components. You know dick.

  7. That's kind of like saying firemen are more dangerous than arsonists. Radiation is not good for you and it's way worse if your a woman or a child. And tell me, since when has the mass media been covering Fukushima at all. And there's a big difference between fear-mongering and being genuinely afraid of something thats invisible but deadly and has been spreading in record amounts since the Manhattan project, not to mention FUKAFUCKINGSHIMA! Lying nukists are not just harmful to public health, turns out they're lethal. We know who butters your bread. Why don't you go burn down some houses and yell at the fire alarms.
