Irma Targets 2 Nuclear Plants Direct Hits-- Turkey Point and St. Lucie -- Chance Of Station Blackout and Meltdown

I will update this article as information presents itself.   At the far bottom are maps of the nuclear plants and the projected trajectories.   But the story below is the real story, they are set up for flooding, like Fukushima.

Added at bottom, photos of 1992 Turkey Point serious damage to critical systems.   This storm was around 140MPH, Irma may be 200.    The way wind power works is a squared law.    Irma will be twice as strong.

If you like this information, please sign up as a follower.   I might think someone is actually listening.

I am reviewing the NRC Flooding Analysis post Fukushima.   Initial review is concerning.

Lessons learned from Hurricane Andrew in 1992
https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/gen-comm/info-notices/1993/in93053.html

Hurricane Andrew Hit Turkey Point 1992. There were a ton of "lessons learned" generated in a letter, but not implemented. The nuclear cartel has captured the NRC and the NRC has no balls to force them to shut down now.

Some very serious problems were close to happening, like a stack damaged and falling on the generator building, loss of that building would lead to a meltdown, a Fukushima.

The on site water tank collapsed onto the fire water system, destroying it. Any plant fire would not have been put out, and the result….a meltdown, a Fukushima

The number 1 concern of the NRC was the timing of the shutdown, the longer it is shutdown, the safer it is due to heat generated by half-lives and heat removal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Video of Irma -- What could possibly go wrong at a nuke plant

They have several flooding scenarios, one is LIP (Locally Intense Precipitation) another is the PMSS (Probable Maximum Storm Surge).

They store emergency equipment in other buildings as part of a FLEX strategy.   These systems need retrieval, movement, and installation in order to work.   This is not at all realistic during a flood.

See the green highlights, they are hanging their hats on the flood going completely away in 75 minutes.    SERIOUSLY!

They are basis how long their batteries will last, based upon disconnecting loads to allow the absolutely essential loads to be powered.   During an emergency is not when you want to be manually disconnecting loads.    You may shut off something that is absolutely essential, with disastrous meltdown results.

Then they are planning to bring a large generator from another building and install it.    AGAIN, in an emergency and a flood, they are not going to be able to accomplish this work.    The gensets should be in place and ready to go!!!! Not to be installed during a flood!    This borders on insanity

The Component Cooling Water (CCW) area is super important because if you can't cool the reactor and associated equipment, you can have a meltdown, think Fukushima.      The Turbine building is also super important, it "houses" the Critical Auxiliary Feedwater (CAF) Pumps which cool the reactor directly in an emergency.     But not to worry, the owner of the plant says these CAF pumps are 7.5 INCHES higher than the expected flood levels, so no further protection is needed.   And the Lap Dog NRC "agreed" with the owner.

Amazingly, in an area subject to Hurricane flooding, and a steady attack of salt air, both critical "structures" are open air, they don't even have walls to protect the equipment.   See Salmon colored highlight.

Amazingly though, since 1980, they reduced the maximum flood level.    It used to be 22.5 MLW
(Mean Low Water Datum).   See further below the new Max Level is 17.5 NAVD88 (A new Datum set in 1988 which is 2.21 feet higher than MLW see link).    Them bottom line though, is that even though there was a Datum change, they still reduced the level of the maximum probably flood, AFTER FUKUSHIMA.   Rather than get safer, they became more risky.

assuming that wind would only create waves of 4.2 feet.   If the waves are bigger then flood level would be even higher.    Here is the earlier source

In the NRC report below, their 2016 design basis HAS BEEN REDUCED to 17.3 feet still water, and 19.1 feet with waves.     Wow cool, 200 MPH winds and only generating waves of 1.8 feet.

Then they back it down again, see the blue highlight below.

Here is the NRC report on Turkey Point Flooding.   They cite tabulated values and summaries, but these are strategically not included with the document.   They want as few people as possible to understand the situation and assumptions, which a summary table would make it too easy.   Only those with the time, knowledge, and patience to do it will see how horribly inept their plans are.
https://www.nrc.gov/docs/ML1714/ML17143A034.pdf

I wonder if they even have food and water for a few days.   South Texas Nuclear forced one of its workers to drive through flood waters to get food because they ran out after not even 2 days.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we saw in Texas, they kept the Nuclear Plant at 100% Power even though predicted flooding was higher than their design basis for the Nuclear Plant.

Now the stronger Irma is predicted for a direct hit on both nuclear plants in Florida.    The captured NRC does not have the balls to demand a prompt shutdown.

I have made contact with both plants and asked them if they have a definite time-frame that they will shut down for safety.    Neither one has responded as of 30 minutes ago.

From our Friends at All Things Nuclear

The fire protection system at the plant was disabled when winds knocked a high tower tank onto a 500,000 gallon tank containing water for the fire protection system. Figure 2 shows the blue base of the high tower tank (B) and the green walls and siding of the demolished water tank (A). Figure 3 shows the red fire protection system piping snapped in two when the high tower tank smashed the 500,000 gallon tank. The high tower tank was intended to supply water by gravity feed for fighting fires while the tank held water that diesel-driven and electric-motor-driven fire pumps could deliver for fire fighting.

Figure 2

Figure 3.
In addition, the winds severely cracked the exhaust stack on the Unit 1 oil-fired plant. Figure 4 shows a close-up of the cracked exhaust stack. If’ the damaged stack had fallen, it could have landed on the building housing the emergency diesel generators for the nuclear units. Considering that the diesel generators were the only source of ac power at the plant for several days, it was extremely fortunate that the leaning stack of Turkey Point did not fall.

          Figure 4

Our Takeaway
A nuclear plant should be designed to withstand the forces of nature expected at its location. Hurricanes with winds up to 175 miles per hour occur in south Florida. A good design would not have high winds disable the fire water system and seriously challenge the backup power system. It’s just wrong to design the emergency diesel generator building to withstand high winds but construct it within falling distance of a heavy stack likely to be toppled by high winds.

Texas Nuke Plant REfuses to Shut Down -- Despite USGS Predictions of nearby River Flooding Above Their Design Basis

South Texas Nuke Plant (STP) is just a small part of electricity production in Texas.

Natural Gas Fired plants are 10 times larger, around 25800 MegaWatts.     STP is just 2500 MW.

Gas and coal plants are shutting down for safety.    But the dying nuclear industry refuses to give up even a day of profits, as Biblical storms pound Texas.

The "Design Basis Flood" of which engineering is done to protect from is 40.0 Mean Sea Level.   See second screen cap down.   Bay City is the nearest River Gauge Station.   They are predicting over 50 ' Mean Sea Level.     But no plans to shut down this nuclear plant.

The Colorado River (of Texas) Basin is huge.   In the NRC Flood Risk Control documents they try to minimize the area of the Basin to make things "look better",   They cut the basin size by almost half.   My calcs show below show 13,389 Trillion gallons of water to hit that basin, using the proper area.

Update: STP Nuke Plant In plain english…
We know that the STNPPL (South Texas Nuclear Power Plant Lake) WILL have problems….
We also KNOW the smaller "loop pond" will be inundated with flood waters…
And the flow pipe exit and intake gates in the small pond will be under water…
Seems clear this is a situation where running those reactors under those conditions is not only wrong it's a violation of both NUREG and state/federal law…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUREG-1150
If you don't believe that look up willful child endangerment in the criminal code…
https://criminal-law.freeadvice.com/criminal-law/violent_crimes/felony-child-endangerment.htm
And endangerment of grandparents too..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endangerment
Don't sit idly by while a major potential nuclear threat looms!!!!
SHUTDOWN THE STP NUCLEAR POWER PLANT NOW!!!!

http://www.energycentral.com/news/stp-nuclear-operating-company-south-texas-project-units-1-and-2
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is granting exemptions from certain portions of the acceptance criteria for emergency core cooling, and the general design criteria for emergency core cooling, containment heat removal, and atmosphere cleanup for the use of a risk-informed analysis to evaluate the effects of debris in containment following a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) for the South Texas Project (STP), Units 1 and 2, located in Matagorda County, Texas, Docket Nos. 50-498 and 50-499, respectively. The exemptions are in response to a request dated June 19, 2013, from the STP Nuclear Operating Company (STPNOC, the licensee) related to STPNOC's proposed approach to resolve a generic safety concern for pressurized water reactors (PWRs) associated with potential clogging of emergency core cooling and containment spray system strainers during certain design basis events.
DATES: The exemption was issued on July 11, 2017.

  • HillbillyHoundDog HillbillyHoundDog
Here's how to make it look good on paper…You all know if I took the time to look these "scientists" up, what would turn up…
    https://experts.illinois.edu/en/publications/risk-informed-resolution-of-generic-safety-issue-191
This paper summarizes the elements of the integrative framework including PRA and the CASA Grande program, as well as the input parameters, assumptions, methodology, and results of the STPNOC analysis. The results show that the risk of core damage or large early release related to the concerns raised in GSI-191 in the as-built, as-operated design for STPNOC is very small (as defined in Regulatory Guide 1.174).

  • "safety concern for pressurized water reactors (PWRs) associated with potential clogging of emergency core cooling and containment spray system strainers during certain design basis events.
DATES: The exemption was issued on July 11, 2017."
Now let's all imagine the level of leaves, limbs, yard items, cans, plastic wrappers, building materials, car parts and other simple trash that is washing downstream NOW!!! (after the largest flood in recorded history).
All this "stuff" (floating and submerged) is being carried down this river from points as far north as Austin and beyond… And it's all in that water that is inundating that nuclear plant, it's cooling supply pipes and many other systems…
This ain't no dress rehearsal folks…
SHUT DOWN THE STP NUCLEAR PLANT NOW!!!!!

  • jec jec
Oh, "potential clogging of emergency core cooling and containment spray system strainers during certain design basis events". Would a 'certain design basis event(s)' be a FLOOD? Seems clogging and floods do seem to go together(there is a lot of junk in the water then to clog up filters!). And define 'very small'..wait we have go go find that Regulatory Guide 1.174 to see what they mean.
Hope STPNOC has it right..seems strange exemption was granted finally after a 4 yr wait..just before major hurricane season hit..and while the GOM season was beginning.

    • In otherwords, believe its possible the STPNOC did nothing to remediate the emergency core cooling systems while they were waiting those four years??? Shouldnt they have completed the work and not waited for exemption approval. Wasnt work supposed to be done due to safety issues? Again, why wait four years..???

What was provided to insure the exemption would be granted? Graft, corruption and greed comes to mind as an application for an exemption is just that, an 'application,' not permission to stop work on a safety requirement.

Your Gut / Immune System: Key to Fighting Disease Caused by Our Toxic Environment

stock here--a few more articles here, lots of science going into Gut Microbiome, or Gut Flora.    This first study is interesting, but they also worry me a lot, but they seem to fall into the classic food triangle trap.

If someone is eating plants, they assume that its "the fiber" which causes broad based gut flora.     Keep in mind, fiber is not at all like fibrous material in a plant, if you don't get that, Google it.

And if someone is eating animals, they assume that it is the fat in the animals that causes decreased Gut Flora.

And they further make the assertation that "the further away from a Western diet, the greater the variety of microbes."    2 problems there, the "Western Diet" is very broad and varies quite a bit in different regions.      2nd issue is that it is not what is eaten in the Western diet, it is the amount of toxins, radiation, degree of processing, use of MSG, high fructose corn syrup, processed salts and sugars, bleached wheat----these are the things that really matter.

One connection that failed to even discuss, are these studied people any more healthy>

http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017/08/24/545631521/is-the-secret-to-a-healthier-microbiome-hidden-in-the-hadza-diet

----------------------------------------------------------------

"Gut Flora" Now Going Mainstream As It Should -- Huff Post

I don't often read Huff Post.    I used to, and used to participate in numerous discussions.   Of course Huff Post is as slanted far left as you can get, that is not me.    So I tried to have discussion, and understand positions.    It was pretty useless, maybe only 1 person of 100 would even consider facts that I brought to the table.

But in researching the "Russia Did It" meme I ran across some interesting stuff at Huff.

It's title leans heavy on the "New Years Resolution Diet" and the idea that you may fail...not because it's your fault....but because you just have the wrong bacteria in your gut.

Your Microbiome May Determine Whether Your Diet Succeeds Or Fails

It's a good article, because it is bringing important information to the forefront, mainstream.   But as with all scientific documents I have searched, it falls far short of providing specific actionable information.

One of the cited authors appears to push her "plant based food" agenda, saying:
“When you look at populations that eat real food that’s high in fiber, and more plant-based foods, you’re going to see they have a more robust microbiota, with more genetic diversity, healthier species and fewer pathogenic bacteria living in the gut

So it's the "fiber" push --- which is fine, but comes without any justification.

And "no one" knows how long corrective actions will take.     Or how much "fermented foods" are needed.

LOL "Even I" the Nukepro, do not know how much pro-biotic foods are "necessary".   I do try to eat 3 pro-biotic things almost every day.    Specifically, actively fermented stuff, not just "high fiber vegetables".

This article says that stress can alter your gut flora, decreasing good bacteria, and increasing bad, with a negative affect on the immune system.

 https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/03/110321094231.htm

And this decidedly more scientific study link gut flora and mental health.    Is there anything good gut flora cannot do?

Fermented foods, microbiota, and mental health: ancient practice meets nutritional psychiatry

 http://jphysiolanthropol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1880-6805-33-2

------------------------------------------------------------
Then we touch on the related issue "Pre-biotics" just throwing that out there, and not schooled up on it yet.

What should be clear is that America, with one of the worst diets in the world, which allows far more types of GMO, GE, pesticides and herbicides than many countries, has lousy health, absurd health care costs, and poor results.

The average life span in USA is now decreasing.    At what point, if ever, do we reach a tipping point, a point of DISGUST in which effective action will occur on a large scale?

------------------------------------
Heres a good one that starts with a strong statement

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24336217/

Diet rapidly and reproducibly alters the human gut microbiome.

But looking at the data, we see a very limited study of only 4 days of diet, and the 2 groups were either strictly plant or strictly animal based.    An obvious 3rd group to study would be a diet based plants and animals and supplemented by 3 types of pro-biotic fermented foods.

---------------------------------------------------------------

And here is a weak at best quote

Much of the composition of the microbiome is established early in life, shaped by forces like your genetics and whether you were breast-fed or bottle-fed

Sheesh, of course for the baby, that is true.    But the implication is that your gut flora is then pretty much set for life, and nothing is further from the truth.    Nor do I believe genetics has much to do with it.     It's shameful writing, without understanding.

much of what we were informed about Lincoln was pretty much bunk.

http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2017/08/21/lincoln-myth-ideological-cornerstone-america-empire/
“Lincoln is theology, not historiology. He is a faith, he is a church, he is a religion, and he has his own priests and acolytes, most of whom . . . are passionately opposed to anybody telling the truth about him . . . with rare exceptions, you can’t believe what any major Lincoln scholar tells you about Abraham Lincoln and race.” –Lerone Bennett, Jr., Forced into Glory, p. 114 The author of the above quotation, Lerone Bennett, Jr., was the executive editor of Ebony magazine for several decades, beginning in 1958.

He is a distinguished African-American author of numerous books, including a biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. He spent twenty years researching and writing his book, Forced into Glory: Abraham Lincoln’s White Dream, from which he drew the above conclusion about the so-called Lincoln scholars and how they have lied about Lincoln for generations.

For obvious reasons, Mr. Bennett is incensed over how so many lies have been told about Lincoln and race.
