We saw in the Texas hurricane and nuclear plant debacle last year, that plants are very poorly prepared for any extended emergency.   In fact a key engineer was forced to drive his personal vehicle through flood waters to get food to feed the plant workers.   What part of "have 3 weeks supply of food AND water on hand" is lost to basic preparedness?

It seems to "over 73MPH" is a mandated shutdown.

Federal requirements mandate once forecasts call for a storm to strike the plant with sustained winds of greater than 73 miles per hour, the plant must shutdown. The reason for this has less to do with concern over structural damage to the facility and more to do with the potential loss of offsite power.

But all the electricity Harris puts out won’t be enough to keep even a night light running at the nuclear plant if a power outage cuts off the facility from the power grid. If off-site power does go out, the Harris plant’s single nuclear reactor will trip off and go to sleep until the lights come back on.

Good grief!    Nuclear plants just don't "go to sleep" and they don't just turn back on"when the lights come back on".   In reality, it is an emergency SCRAM, a total thermal shock to the system, and the testing of dozens of components needed to shut these raging beasts down.    It is the most dangerous likely event at a nuclear plant.   And most of these designs are from the 1960's and 1970's, you remember, the days of Pacer X, and the Pinto?

Duke energy admits that up to 3/4 of the entire grid could be down....but they refuse to shut down Harris, while admitting the likelihood that the overall grid including the outside power to the plant could be lost, initiating an emergency scram.  

Gusts will likely be strong enough, when combined with waterlogged ground, to topple trees into power lines and snap utility poles. Duke said Wednesday that as many as three-fourths of its customers in North Carolina and South Carolina could lose power during the storm.

NRC has for decades realized that in early GE control system designs, there are some idiosyncrasies in the electrical control systems which would prevent an emergency shutdown from actually occurring.    Did you read that correctly?    During the worst possible emergency, a SCRAM, a system operator, under extreme stress, must bear in mind that they cannot turn a dial control too quickly to the Shutdown (SCRAM) position, because it must be turned slowly through the Startup and Refuel zones, or else relays would prevent the system from going into SCRAM and having the control rods inserted to stop the criticality reaction.

Risk control is a joke when it comes to nuclear power plants.      But don't worry.....they have it all under control, I wonder why they have to use the weasel words "we understand".....

We understand that General Electric has been informed of this potential for 
bypassing the MSS and that General Electric is preparing a Service 
Information Letter (SIL) containing recommendations for preventing such 
bypassing.

Sure GE will come up with a note that no one reads that says "In the event of the worst possible emergency requiring a SCRAM....make sure you  turn the dial slowly and pause in the Startup mode in order for the poorly designed relays to not "race each other" and prevent the shutdown when you need it the most....

Lets focus on Brunswick Nuclear Plant

Below is the Design Basis.   No telling if they are actually built to "take it", but this is what they are supposed to design to.   It looks OK, at least as far as the Brunswick plant shut not flood out itself.  But this misses the real point.   The loss of offsite power is likely.   This will cause an emergency switchover to many backup systems, and if things don't all go perfectly, it's called station blackout.

A station blackout, is a pretty much sure thing nuclear explosion/eruption or meltout, or both. 

It is criminal to take this type of risk.  

Forecasters predicted storm surges up to 13ft (4 meters) in parts of coastal North Carolina, and the storm could dump 20 to 30in (50-76cm) of rain in the hardest hit areas – and even up to 40in in isolated spots.

But at the Plant's Facebook Page they were told to "Ride it Out" and many members and relatives were "Praying".    Why not just shut this old clunker down!

This beffudles the imagination.    Shutdowns don't always go "as planned", and one company owns 8
of these 12.

When reactors lose outside power, they go into an emergency mode, and if things go wrong....you can get a meltdown.    But rather than be cautious, they want to milk these old rust buckets for every penny they can get.  

LOL to "maximize value to shareholders" even though they may create an "exclusion zone" that almost kills our country.

Large Deep Earthquake in Fiji 7.8, Verifies The Calm EQ Period Is Over, And We Are Back to Unprecendented

My first thought is that California or that Slip structure off Oregon could be at big risk at this time.   Based on what you ask?   Mostly INTUITION, but also based on the extreme events of this year, and the "Quiet Sun".

2) EQ right on the old Caldera for Moana Loa (Kileaua is on the far flank of Moana Loa).   Incidentally Moana Loa is the "largest" volcano on the planet, at least height wise.    I have not deep dived on the Yellowstone "volcano" but that seems more like a magma chamber to me.
3) EQ surrounding Moana Kea
4) Super rare large deep earthquakes.
5) Largest EQ ever on the North Slope of Alaska
6) Huge Earthquake on Indonesia Take the Pressure off Hawaii WITHIN HOURS!

11) 6.9 in Indonesia at the Infamous Rinjani Volcano.    The last big Eruption was in 1257 AD which blow out sailors ear drums 40 miles away.     It also happened at the beginning of Quiet Sun.   Quiet Sun started the Volcano, and then together with atmospheric reflection AND Quiet Sun nucleation of clouds led us into regime changing Little Ice Age.

"Calm" Earthquake Time is Over, 6.7 Pounds Hokkaido Japan, Hawaii's Mauna Kea is Hit, Alaska Hit

Do Hurricanes and low pressure help trigger Earthquakes?   Especially in the presence of water Dams?    It sure looks like it in Hokkaido.   Note that earthquakes on land are very rare in Hokkaido.   They are more common off the east coast in the Ocean. 

2.5 on Mauna Kea 090518 Relatively deep at 53km

Today's EQ on Mauna Kea, was originally listed at 53kM deep, which would have made it the deepest earthquake in the last 100 years.    But without comment or annotation, it was modified to be 11 kM

3 EQ on Mauna Kea in the last month, reflecting a 1800% increase over 100 year average.

About 15 EQ per year over 5.0 at this Triple Junction off South America. But 6 just in the last 3 days
