Examples abound. When valves leaked, more leakage was allowed — up to 20 times the original limit. When rampant cracking caused radioactive leaks from steam generator tubing, an easier test of the tubes was devised, so plants could meet standards.

Failed cables. Busted seals. Broken nozzles, clogged screens, cracked concrete, dented containers, corroded metals and rusty underground pipes — all of these and thousands of other problems linked to aging were uncovered in the AP's yearlong investigation. If Possible, Control Your Food Environment, Produce it Yourself

I been 14 hours a day ramping up my own food production systems to supply ALL the food for my family and dogs. So far so good, looks great.

Multiple reasons:

  1. Cali drought means food cost way up

Damage Documented from low dose 1mSv and Background Radiation Sources

The absence of the WHO (UN World Health Organization) is remarkable in these statements. Especially since human health is their primary responsibility.

The WHO did issue a report regarding the negative health effects:

Increased cancer risks for affected children in the region between 4% (solid cancers), 7% for leukemia, 70% for thyroid cancers.

That organizations such as IAEA & UNSCEAR, whose members have substantial interest in more nuclear declare that Fukushima doesn’t harm human health, says little.

Research after Chernobyl clearly showed that extra levels of only 1mSv/year harm next generations already substantial:

Here is one example from that report from Chernobyl using a vast amount of data over a long period of time.  CLP is Cleft Lip.    

In Bavaria, from October 1986 to December 1990, the CLP frequency increased by 9.5% (p = 0.10) relative to the trend as computed from the remaining years. The association of CLP rates with fallout on a district level is reflected by a significant relative risk (RR) per kBq/m 2 of RR=1.008 (p = 0.03). A synoptic analysis of the Bavarian data and the GDR data restricted to the overlapping time window from 1984 to 1989 discloses a simultaneous significant jump of the CLP prevalence by 8.6% (p = 0.02) after 1986. The presumption of a long-term increase of CLP after exposure to Chernobyl fallout is corroborated by the analysis of the Bavarian congenital malformation data [13].

Thanks, MS: there's much baseline, survey and assumptions information in these two resources that I didn't have. The difference between the NCRP-95 (1987) and NCRP-160 (2006) documents was particularly interesting. Average annual exposure nearly doubles.

Dandelions, an Excellent Health Aid, Liver Aid, Heavy Metal Detox--Look at this huge field of Dandelions!

We had an awesome meal last night based on Dandelions.    We spent around 10 minutes picking the best of the best leaves.

Miso Soup --- Fantastic!    No bitterness, and a mild tanginess, this ain't your grandma's Miso Soup, or maybe it is.

Dandelion Tempura --- fantastic, fried with a little flour, taste great with or without salt.    We also fried some complete plant, leaves and flower, and those were even better.    We did not use any root.

Butter fried Dandelion, was still pretty bitter, but the dogs loved it.

Fresh leaf, just washed, too bitter to be enjoyable, but this is late in  the season, the younger leaves do make good salad accompaniments.

As I surveyed thousands of dandelions in my front yard, I thought a little research would be good.    I had heard they are good to eat, and make tea from.

Instead, I find that perhaps they are an incredibly convenient way to help remove heavy metals, and esp. radioactive heavy metals from the body, without going to the fairly dangerous DMSA and EDTA chelation therapies.  Dandelions are also directly beneficial to the liver.

Don't curse those dandelions!  Instead, use them as a nice Spring Detox!

According to the USDA Bulletin #8, "Composition of Foods" (Haytowitz and Matthews 1984), dandelions rank in the top 4 green vegetables in overall nutritional value

Alaska Radiation Increased from Fukushima the Same Amount as a Direct Nuclear Bomb Test on Alaska


The Alaska nuclide test report Stock pointed out is very informative, and I urge people to read the whole thing, and to find out more about the monitoring that has been being done there since 1965. Amchitka was the site of several underground nuclear tests; the neighboring island of Adak is used as a “control” to which nuclide levels can be compared.

The 2011 monitoring season came 3 months after the start of the Fukushima disaster. As the report notes (section 9.0):

“The results imply that Dolly Varden, rockweed, and to a lesser extent, Irish lord appear to contain a significant cesium isotope signature from Fukushima Dai-ichi. ……

… Observations of Fukushima-derived fallout impacting on this region are supported by findings of elevated levels of 134Cs (and 137Cs) in lichen and soil collected from both the Adak and Amchitka regions.”

So there’s no doubt that Fukushima nuclides made it to the Aleutians, and yes, they also made it to CA and elsewhere. The important question is “In what concentrations?” And, “How can we find out how much we got, and where it is?” The Amchitka tests focus on lichen because it’s one of the greatest biological concentrators of Cs. The levels in lichen are regularly hundreds or thousands of times higher than what’s found in the soil beneath them. Amazing creatures, and somewhat like mushrooms in this regard. In arctic regions, species like reindeer feed on the lichen, which contributes to high contamination levels in their flesh which persists for decades. It’s worth pointing out, however, that caribou in northern Canada, for instance, show eye-openingly high levels of internal contamination from natural radionuclides as well, particularly Po210, and people who have relied on them as a food source for centuries had high internal contamination themselves even before the nuclear era because of it.

They tested fish, seaweed, and other marine species caught off Amchitka and Adak for Cs137, Am241, U234, 235, and 238, and Pu239 and 240at the same time, and came up with less than 1 Bq/kg of Cs in the highest sample, which was mussels. Table 15 shows that samples from the Irish Sea are much higher, up to around 11 Bq/kg. All this is just for context

I agree that there are good reasons to do more monitoring right about now, and not wait until 2016. And no good reason not to do more testing in CA as well.

Anyway, we’ve established that Fukushima contamination was clearly detectable in Alaskan lichen in the sumer of 2011. But how did that compare to before the Fukushima disaster? A look at table 40 (it’s posted on the website Stock linked to) gives a very good idea:

In table 40: Cs137 in lichen

1970-71 Clam lake range 8000-27000 pCi/kg (300-1000 Bq/kg) (stock --after three massive atomic bombs were set off on the island)
1971-79 Clam lake range 1500-67000 pCi/kg (55-2479 Bq/kg) (stock --after the three atomic bombs were set off on this island, the radiation in lichens tripled after the first initial dosing, and then lasted for a decade)

1997 Amchitka range 64-74 pCi/kg (2.3-2.7 Bq/kg)
2011 Amchitka range 1890-7120 pCi/kg (70-263 Bq/kg) (stock--after Fukushima)

STOCK--So Fukushima, 2000 miles away caused a radiation level about 1/4 of what three direct atomic bombs would do at ground zero.   Look at the blue highlights above.   Think about that now.)  

The point being that while Cs levels in 2011 had increased compared to 1997 due to Fukushima, they were still lower than anytime between 1970-79, due to nuclear testing.  (Stock --due to direct bombing of the island the tests were conducted on, not at all a fair comparison!)

Stock Here-- This reviewer is kind of pretending that the high rates at Clam lake  are due to overall world wide nuclear testing "fallout".    Clam lake is in the Anchitka Island which was not receiving just worldwide nuclear fallout, but was the actual site of several direct nuclear bomb tests.

And this is one of the points: outside of the most contaminated parts of Fukushima itself, the fallout from this disaster was much less than that from the nuclear testing period. (stock here---from the nuke testing of 3 bombs on one island, including the largest nuke bomb ever set off by the USA, and they are comparing that to contamination from the Fukushima over 2000 miles away--stock out) That doesn’t make it alright, and we’re not saying bomb test fallout was ok either. In fact as a society we’re still trying to understand what the health effects from testing were.


From our point of view, as a group of people very committed to characterizing and measuring the contamination in order to help people make well-informed decisions regarding their health and well-being, the more we understand about how this compares with past radioactive releases and their effects, the better our decisions and choices will be.

How to Calculate Total Fission Inventory in used Fuel (Thank you to NRC for helping)

This helps to answer my questions on total inventory of radiation at Fukushima. That will present a worst case scenario of release.

stock: I have reviewed and this is a great resource.    I asked a further question related to MOX which I think will show much worse ending product of spent fuel due to more neutrons flying around and a hotter burn rate.   Will advise if I obtain data.

now, a good estimate of total radiation inventory at Fukushima may be calculated.    I will do so, busy on spring projects, it may take a while.

The NRC does not track the isotopic inventory in each spent fuel assembly at nuclear power plants. The following is a link to a public document titled “Characteristics of Potential Repository Wastes”:

It contains physical, isotopic, and thermal characteristics of all type of commercial spent nuclear fuel assemblies. For example, in the middle of Table 2.4.13 on Page 2.4.17, the most dominant (i.e., >1%) isotopes, in terms of curies/Metric Tons of Initial Heavy Metal (MTIHM), for a typical Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) spent fuel assembly enriched up to 4.42%, burned up to 40,000 MWD/MTIHM, and cooled for 10 years are shown. These numbers are still valid to date. The number for each isotope should be multiplied by 0.45 MTIHM/assembly, which is a typical number for a PWR assembly, in order to obtain the isotopic inventory in a single PWR fuel assembly.

Word Is Slowly Getting out to New Mexico

A reader has suggested the the strange head twist (at 14 seconds in) as he begins his statement of I am Become Death is actually the devil entering his body. It sure is odd. And look at his face, the stress, the introspection, the resignment.

Relative Risks of Various Types of Radiation and Whether Internal or External



Moving kids back into areas of 20 mSv/year in Japan in insane at any level, but more insane when you consider that the radiation is assumed to stay all external.    The Rad Crap in and on the soil, and to be washed out of the air will all eventually go into food or water consumed by a  human.    It will almost all become internal  

So for our most likely suspects, Cesium, Strontium, Uranium, Plutonium, all long lived, all extremely damaging as internal with different weighting factors.

It is generally accepted that Alpha within the body is 20 times worse than a high penetration Gamma.    But where does the "20" come from,
it appears to be a number "that the nuclear industry can work with" per Paul Langley.   Now that 50% to 66% get cancer, you have to wonder how much understatement is going on.


But let's assume 20 is a good number for now anyway.     OK Cesium you can have Wr=20
How about Strontium?  The Bone seeker, some call it the bogeyman, the nukers want to keep Strontium (Sr) in the closet.    But Strontium is not just deadly all by itself, it decays to Yttrium 90 with a short half life of 2.5 days, at a wicked world class MMA punch of 2.2 Mev.   So think of your cells adjacent to the internal strontium as a human who takes a big hit from a strong street thug (Sr decay), and then 2.5 days later while you are still trying to recovery, Mohammed Ali comes up and super pounds you while in your already weakened state.   The worst thing for a cell is the double punch, this can cause a cancer or mutation.   Read more here.


So is Strontium accurately accounted for with the weighting of 20, or should it be 50 or 200.    Even in the current University offerings they use a cute “RBM” when talking about Strontium, would the average reader figure out this is for Red Bone Marrow, and that it leads to leukemia.
Plutonium, makes Strontium (the Bogeyman) look like a Leave it To Beaver episode.    We are mostly concerted with Pu239 of which
Fine particles of pure plutonium-239 oxide (formed when plutonium burns) are very intense sources of alpha particles.
          Geesaman and Tamplin have shown that such fine particles, referred to as "hot" particles because of their extremely high alpha particle emission in a localized region, may be 10 to 1000 times more effective in producing cancer than would be expected if the same number of rads were delivered in a more diffuse manner to an organ, such as the lung.
          It is this "hot" particle problem associated with plutonium-239 that makes the contemplated, future, widespread use of this radionuclide as a fuel in the nuclear-electricity-generation plants such an unmitigated nightmare for mankind.
So if we accepted the Weighting Factor Wr for Plutonium as 20 (and ignored it known nasty effect also as a very Heavy Metal) and considered the “repeated local attack” effect of Geesaman and Tamplin, then the true weighted Wr is in the range of 20*10, and 20*1000.     

On the most simple level, Plutonium should be weighted at Wr of 200 to 20000.

This study showed that Plutonium should be weighted at 112,000 compared to a basic Gamma blast.




The University of Michigan estimated the biological half life of Plutonium to be 50 years once in the bones, and 20 years in the liver.    Once in the blood, 45% will go to bones, and 45% will go to liver, and around .03% will go to testes or ovaries.

We don't know how much they have been lying, but one thing is for sure, they attempt to cover up, and then they attempt to minimize, and then they attempt to confuse the issue, and then additional admissions come out (usually).    
For sure, a lot of Plutonium and Americium came out in the air.    And it came out for weeks because they had some open ductworks prior to the "good" HEPA filters, so the contaminated air was blasted out through an opening at a high volume rate.      We only have their numbers to work with, so it could be highly variable.   We know that TEPCO has lied for years, and when they do fess up we find they have been lying by a factor of 10 to 100.     The more they have to lie, the more they do lie.
HUGE LIE, An Argument of False Equivalence
One of the HUGE lies they are still running with is that they are comparing Pu and Am to any other type of radiation, and it is not.    One chart above shows that sucking in some hot Pu particles is 110,000 times worse than your average non-transuranic radiation.     But WIPP and DOE and the University "independent lab" which is funded by DOE 100%, all have been pretending that Pu and Am are equal to the more harmless of external radiation.
HUGE LIE!     Pu and Am are some of the most dangerous things on the planet.    When breathed in they kill 255 out of 255 young Beagles in 2 to 5 years.
How Much Plutonium Does It Take to “Almost For Sure” Kill a Human
Some people say that even one microgram (one one-millionth of  gram)  will  kill a human.    And that is true...I mean it is possible that one micro-gram could product a lung, liver, or bone tumor that would cause death.   But now what is likely?     The "best" testing was on Beagles, but sometimes some animals are more tolerant than humans when it comes to contamination, they don't live as long, but dogs are tougher while they live.   But if humans were as tough as Beagles, then a dose of 150 micro-grams to 450 micro-grams would be enough to almost for sure kill you in say 2 to 10 years, maybe 20.

OK now let’s bring it home so to speak.     They were pumping air out of that radiation cave at the rate of 100,000 CFM and maybe a bit higher because they had some big open hole to the atmosphere (that was a mistake on their part, could be something to do with the recent fire 2 weeks earlier, who knows, but they did fess up to that).     So roughly 10% to 20% was going directly to the atmosphere.
CFM Cubic Feet per Minute
OK what does this CFM mean?  Well it’s Cubic Feet Per Minute.   What does that mean?   Well let’s use an example.    A really good quality kitchen exhaust fan (not the cheap ones you often see at a house) but a gourmet kitchen or a light commercial kitchen will have an exhaust fan that can push 500 CFM.    That’s a lot of air!      Well the amount they were exhausting was like 2000 of this really good fans.     And 10% to 20% was going direct to atmosphere, so that is like 200 to 400 really good fans, pumping the radiation accident direct into the atmosphere....and that lasted for several WEEKS.    
Grams, a Pretty Small Unit of Weight
OK now to bring the concept of "grams" into something you can relate to.    Picture a dime, and make it a silver dime, you know back before 1963 when money was “real money”, back when you sometimes trust what the government was telling you?   Right, back in the day before spin was “in”.      OK that silver dime weighs 2.5 Grams (g).   Now what if it was Plutonium?    Well Plutonium is a VERY heavy metal, in fact it weighs almost 240% more than silver.   That’s heavy.     OK so some Plutonium (Pu), about the size of a dime would have 240% more mass than the silver, or roughly 6 grams of Pu.    That is equal to 6,000,000 micrograms.     
Some people state that a single microgram can kill a person, so if that dime size material was vaporized and exhausted out the exhaust fans, AND it was distributed equally to 6,000,000 people it could kill all of them.     Well I don’t think that Plutonium is that dangerous, at least on the basis of “is it almost for sure going to kill you”.   I think a better number for “almost for sure going to kill you”, is about 300 micrograms of Pu.    
You got a calculator?   Sheesh, don’t make me do all the work, divide 6,000,000 by 300 and see how many people could be killed “almost for sure”.   Again based on that amount being equally distributed among those people.     
How many “dimes” of vaporized Pu do you think came out of that radiation cave with 200 to 400 high quality fans pumping air out, with 10% to 20% of the air bypassing the filters, for weeks on end?     How much dust do you get when you vacuum your house and it doesn’t even look dirty?  
How many 55 gallon barrels of high level waste do they have in that cave?    500,000 total and about 2% to 4% is high level (highly dangerous concentrations).    4% is supposedly the maximum they are planning on storing in their cave, but in reality, in their deep dark hearts, the nuclear “scientists” who don’t give a rip about you and want to put all the waste, even from nuclear power plants down there.   And if YOU don’t shut them down NOW, at this crisis, and while they are being caught in their lies, then it will happen, they will stuff that cave full of everything radioactively dangerous in the country.     Either way, stop now or fill to the brim, I would never ever live within 50 miles of that radiation cave.
How Much High Level Waste Have They Put Into WIPP?
4% of 500,000 barrels is 20,000 Barrels of high level waste, that’s a lot!    How high is “high level”.    Well the former director of the “independent” monitoring agency for WIPP was caught bragging on a pro-nuclear website called Atomic Insights, just recently,  that they stashed very hot liquids down there, “hotter than anything at Hanford, 7 Curies per Liter”.      Google “Hanford Radioactive Waste” and realize that what they are trucking into New Mexico from all over the country is worse than that.
A Liter is Almost the Same As A Quart
OK let’s bring it home again.   You probably know what a Liter is…it’s what most larger soda bottles are, about the same size as a Quart.    OK simple enough on that one…now we get to the tricky part, the part that the pro-nukers count on, using varying engineering units so that people just turn their brain off and never get a “gut feeling” for what a radiation unit is.    Don’t turn your brain off yet, follow me down this last rabbit hole just a little bit, and I am going to convert that 1 liter of radiation at 7 curies, into the amount of Chickens that would be contaminated to the point that you shouldn’t EVER eat them.     OK how many Chickens?
Curies & Bq (or Becquerel) Are a Way to Measure Radiation.   Curies is A LOT, A Becquerel is A Little.   
7 Curies is 259,000,000,000 Bq and if you want to run down these rabbit holes yourself, you can use this really cool online calculator, here is the proof of those numbers.
50 Bq per pound is the upper limit in animal flesh for radiation.   So for the average Costco size Chicken at 5 lbs, a total radiation load of 250 Bq would be a rational maximum.    
OK can your calculator fit 259,000,000,000 divided by 250 Bq?     I’ll give you the answer, about  1 Billion Chickens contaminated from 1 liter of that “hotter than anything at Hanford” liquid.    
OK That is One Liter, How Many Liters Do They Have In That Cave?
OK how many liters in a 55 gallon barrel?     It’s actually fun to ask the online calculator and make IT do the work.    
The answer is 208 Liters per barrel.   And at 1 Billion Chickens per Liter, that is 208 Billion Chickens that could be contaminated by 1 barrel!     Is there even 208 Billion Chickens in the whole WORLD?   There are only around 6 Billion people.
Now are you starting to understand the incredible danger of what they are doing in that cave?    They have at least 20,000 barrels of this high level radiation down there now.     And another 480,000 barrels of other radioactive waste.   And they want to keep adding more, and they want to expand the scope to include even more dangerous stuff.  

And then they tell us “take it or leave it”, we either stuff it in the WIPP cave or we just leave it were it is at.    Huh, an ultimatum from these “scientists” who made the mess.   This is another false argument of Limited Choices.   And no, “We The People” do not accept limited choices, especially when you are putting our children at grave risk, and us too, at grave risk.
 
Putting it all in one place does not make sense, especially because we now know that when these various wastes mix up through corrosion of the steel containers they are putting in the salt, or through accidents where one barrel blows up and ruptures others, or a ceiling collapse.   

The “scientists” who created all this really dangerous waste never thought there could be a large collapse at WIPP, but it happened in the past, the day after workers were in a cave section called a “panel”, and more than    It was beyond their “design basis”.   In other words, their assumptions were not accurate enough nor careful enough from the beginning.    Now their response is “we have to keep going, we have to keep filling WIPP up, because there is nowhere else for the waste WE created to go, and we will just have to use bigger bolts so the ceiling doesn’t collapse so fast.”

Didn’t we hear here that expression before when government officials were trying to cover up a big scary problem at Amity on the Atlantic ocean “I think we are going to need a bigger boat!”.      LOL

The bottom line is that these “scientists” who are trying to cover up their stinking mess are ignoring new information as it presents itself, and are “all in” on stuffing all the waste into one place in New Mexico which will, perhaps sooner rather than later, become inaccessible and therefore impossible for us to deal with any problem that comes up.     And they don’t care about you, they will lie to you.    The former president of WIPP (Mohammed Farok Shariff) went on video at the town hall meeting as stating “it is like getting a dental X-ray”.    Ask him about that when you see him at the local grocery store buying a chicken.

 Hmmm, eh Mohammed, are you really telling the little people that sucking down plutonium is like a dental Xray?     Wow.
And now they tell you to trust them, they got it all figured out now, and the only reason they are going slow now in getting back into the cave is “because so many people are interfering”.    

 In the meantime, because the accident area is too hot to enter, they are paying over 1000 people full wages, while not working,  at a cost to the taxpayer of around $640,000 a day.   Seems like I could rent a robot and get them down there to assess things for less than a few million, right?   They want to make sure the gravy keeps flowing so the whistle-blowers keep quiet.
URS is the parent corporation of the private company who runs WIPP under “family” supervision from DOE.      URS also does work at Hanford where there have been allegations from fired employees who claim they are whistleblowers who were cautioning the company and DOE against the chances that mixed radioactive liquids could off gas hydrogen and blow up in a massive accident.   Does any of this sound familiar?
